  55. It may not be that easy.  Some units, like the Radio Shack multi-channel
  56. model, cannot be modified.  The cheapo kiddie HTs can probably
  57. be modified this way, but they are AM, and have a less-than-stellar
  58. receiver.  If it's for a college project, fine, but don't expect to 
  59. hit repeaters with them.

  81. Baud is essentially the frequency of the data signal.  This is NOT the
  82. same as the carrier frequency.  With FSK modulation, 1 bit is transmitted
  83. for each change in the data signal so in this case, Baud = bps.
  84.  
  85. The more sophisticated modems encode multiple bits per baud via phase
  86. encoding and other methods.  Your 9600 bps modem communicates at 2400
  87. baud, but can send 4 bits per baud yielding 9600 bps.  (14.4K send 
  88. 6 bits per baud)
  89.  
  90. Most people mistakenly equate baud 1:1 with bps.  I dunno what ARRL
  91. folks do.

  110. If your unit is only 6 months old, then the hardware problem should
  111. have been fixed already, unless the store had one in stock from
  112. two or three years ago and sold it to you.   And I believe that the
  113. hardware mod was for interference caused by the 162 MHz weather
  114. stations.

  116. The problems you mention are typical of Ft-470s and other HTs with
  117. extended receive.  You get something (more receive frequencies),
  118. you give up something. (selectivity)

  493. Well, As the sub says, I'm new to ham radio and would like someone to direct me
  494. to the proper FAQ or book that will tell me about the various areas of ham
  495. radio such as packet, UHF, repeaters, DTMF, etc. (I don't REALLY know what all
  496. that stuff means yet).  I understand electronics fairly well, but can't find
  497. any UP-TO-DATE info on what ham radio offers.
